We’re Making Nighttime Wine Picnics A Thing.


Picnics are fun, but let’s UP the intrigue. Gather the crew and get outside after dark for a night time wine picnic. Keep reading for everything you need to host your very own post sunset soiree.

First, select your spot. Your very own backyard works great, but this is a good opportunity to check out other parks in your area. Before venturing out, just be sure to make sure that the park doesn’t close at sundown and that wine is allowed.

Pack your picnic basket with your favorite Apothic wine, bottled water, and your favorite snacks. Gather picnic blankets, pillows, a bluetooth speaker and anything else you may need to keep it cozy and set the mood. Next, get luminescent. Look for glow-in-the dark wine glasses, glow sticks, and solar powered stones to enhance the experience.

And, while you're there, check out the stars. There are several apps available for download on your smartphone that can teach you everything you need to know about the constellations.

The 2021 Apothic Red is a rich Zinfandel-led Red blend with red silky, smooth layers of black cherry, boysenberry and black pepper. Syrah and Merlot add intriguing notes of ripe blueberry and boysenberry, while a mix of other red varieties add dimension and depth with hints of spice. Soft and plush on the palate, the long finish brings vanilla and mocha characteristics, a reflection of the selective oak aging used to enhance and support the wine’s elegant appeal. <br><br> <b>Viticulture Notes</b><br> We selected the majority of the grapes for Apothic Red from the Lodi and Central Valley areas in California. We sourced the Zinfandel from Lodi, a premium producer of intensely concentrated, silky textured fruit. California’s 2021 growing season was cool and mild, excellent conditions for developing mature, layered fruit. A heat spell in August resulted in an earlier than average harvest. Wines from this vintage showcase vibrant acidity and concentrated flavors. <br><br> <b>Winemaking Notes</b><br> Red was our first Apothic release: a daringly bold and original blend of California-grown red grapes that created a phenomenon. Grapes for 2021 Apothic Red were de-stemmed, with a portion selected for whole-cluster fermentation. We fermented the wine for five to seven days in a combination of cone-sweep and upright tanks at a temperature averaging 85-88°F. Across all lots, we exercised meticulous temperature control to maximize the extraction of color and dark fruit notes.

Our appealing Apothic Chardonnay opens with generous notes of crisp red and green apple, layered with hints of honey, caramel and vanilla. Viognier in the blend adds intriguing aromatic floral and tropical fruit characteristics. This luscious wine offers a silky-smooth texture and a bright, lively finish. <br><br> <b>Viticulture Notes:</b><br> We selected the majority of the grapes for Apothic Chardonnay from the unique Lodi Delta region in California. With its cool evenings and warm days, Lodi is known as a producer of fragrant, concentrated and silky textured fruit. California’s 2022 growing season was cool and mild, with a heat spell in August that resulted in an earlier than average harvest. Wines showcase vibrant acidity and concentrated flavors.  <br><br> <b>Winemaking Notes:</b><br> We harvested a majority of the grapes for our Apothic Chardonnay at night in cool temperatures to preserve the character of the fruit. The fruit was whole-cluster pressed, then the juice settled and was racked to tank to optimize clarity and mouthfeel. The Chardonnay underwent partial malolactic fermentation and was fermented on selected oak with sur lie aging, enhancing the wine’s delicate fruit flavors while adding subtle caramel, cream and spice characteristics. A portion of the Chardonnay and Viognier were fermented in stainless-steel tanks.
